Kirby Right Back at Ya Escargon in Mother's Eyes
Mirror Escargoon Headcanons
So, since I already made a list of my headcanons for Escargoon (which you should check out first), I might as well make a list of headcanons for my interpretation of Mirror Escargoon! Here we go!
HEADS UP!! There's some mentions of injury here!! Read with caution!!
He insists on being referred to as "Lord" or "Doctor" Escargon. Calling him "Escargoon" or "Escargon" without using an honorific will prompt him to ignore you, scoff at you, or in some cases, hit you with his cane.
Because of Shadow DeDeDe's lack of confidence and unhappy demeanour, Mirror Escargoon often finds himself trying to motivate his king to do anything. His attempts are often fruitless, resorting in Shadow DeDeDe ordering from NME to "liven things up". However, when he does manage to cheer the king up, it is often because he has come up with a new invention or another wacky plant mutant.
Because of his pointed teeth, cape, and his love of wine, people in Cappy Town have begun theorizing that he is a vampire. However, he dismisses these rumours as untrue.
Unlike his normal counterpart, Mirror Escargoon never lied to his mother about being king. He decided that it would be cruel to lie to his mother, so he is always honest with her. This is because she is very sick and her condition could worsen, resulting in death. If she were to die, he wouldn't have been able to live with the fact that he lied to her. So, he never did.
Mirror Escargoon enjoys building robots just as much as his normal counterpart. However, when he isn't doing that, he is tending to his garden of mutant plants. His first ever plant mutant was a mandrake-rose hybrid. Some of these plants are harmless. Others… not so much.
Mirror Escargoon's cape is very, very cozy. He loves it just as much as he loves his lab coat. You can even catch him using it as a blanket… if you dare intrude on his slumber.
Like his normal counterpart, he also collects rings. However, he is very careful with them and keeps them well hidden.
(OCs mentioned) He is also married to Mirror Isabelle (who will get her own post in due time). They have children. Like his normal counterpart, he kept them away from Dreamland to avoid coming into contact with Mirror Nightmare.
Mirror Escargoon is blind in his right eye. He got this scar when he was working in his lab. An accident involving something sharp caused him to injure his eye. He was quickly sent to the hospital. However, because the king always kept him on his toes, he had no time to let his eye recover properly, resulting in blindness. He hates talking about it, and will start to shiver a bit when asked about what happened.

In the sleepy Pupu Village, everyone has their own way of celebrating Mother's Day. Kirby joins Fumu and Bun in preparing the best Mother's Day breakfast ever, while Sirica and Knuckle Joe reminisce with Meta Knight about their fallen friends and family. Unfortunately, King Dedede can't go even a day without being the center of attention, and orders a Demon Beast to … shake things up a bit. When Dedede orders the Demon Beast to impersonate the mothers of the village - and some outside the village - will Kirby and his friends realize it in time to stop him?
What could have been only a semi-unusual day in Dream Land quickly spirals out of control as the truth of Kirby's origin is suddenly revealed, raising more questions than answers.
Galacta Knight-centric. All characters anthropomorphized.
btw, here's the Galacta Knight fic I'm writing! it's anime-verse and gijinka. I just put up chapter 4 today, and I'm mostly done writing the next two chapters already. this fic is super self-indulgent, but I'm pretty proud of it!

My own Escargon Rant
Something that always stuck out to me about Escargon is his design. In an environment of discussing abuse and gay coding, it might be a wonder as to why that is being focused on here. Well, that's because a lot can be said about a character purely based on the way they look, even one-off characters like Escargon, whose only character development for over ten years of Kirby canon has been limited to Hoshi no Kaabii/Kirby: Right Back at Ya. There's certainly a lack of information, it's not like fans can just ask about lore and get an answer, or stumble upon production notes any deeper than a character description, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating about the Star Warrior/Galaxy Soldier Army. Perhaps this lack of discussion stems from not knowing where to start, but I want to start.
One of the most striking things about Escargon is how strange his character design is compared to his setting. He is literally just a snail with arms. A large, purple snail, but still just a snail. He doesn't have any powers, he's not particularly strong or mystical, and there's nothing hiding behind his design down to the cliche evil goatee. As Sonic the Hedgehog would say, "what you see is what you get" with Escargon, and as a one-off character* I believe this is mostly unintentional, with the stronger elements of his characterisation coming through the voice acting and the writing (both literally in the words he uses and the way he sounds). Unlike the Cabinet Minister's family, who are also anime-exclusive characters, there are only two characters shown that look like Escargon: himself and his mother. This lends itself very well to a character beat introduced in Like Mother, Like Snail/Escargoon Rules; the fact that he is an outsider to Dreamland. Sure, he's in a high position and everybody knows him, but alongside King Dedede's tyrannical government which he represents, his outsider-ness alienates him further from the people of Cappytown.
Or at least it should, but this is unfortunately never brought up. Likely because of how insignificant it seems. After all, Kirby is a family show that was intended to be easy for everyone to watch, but that never shied away from some of the more mature** themes presented, like how anime artists are overworked (Cartoon Buffoon), propaganda, wiretapping, subliminal messaging (Don't Bank on It) or that one episode where it was predicted the world was going to end (Prediction Predicament Part I and II) to name a few. With all those themes in mind, an episode about being culturally alienated from one's new home wouldn't be out of the question, and with everything that makes Escargon stand out (his physical appearance, the way he talks, and the way he forms his plans), it seems almost obvious to make an episode about where he came from. Hell, Meta Knight gets more canon backstory than Escargon, and in terms of screentime Meta Knight on average has far less than Escargon in any given episode which is not centered on either of them.
After Like Mother…, the single juicy piece of backstory which launched this rant is never touched upon again, but it begs so many questions. Other than making his mama proud (which is incredibly vague), why did Escargon leave the farm? Was it just him and his mom, or does he have more family back home? What is back home like? What did he give up to be in Dreamland? But most of all, as someone who has felt culturally alienated throughout most of my life, I want to know how he was treated at first. He likely wouldn't have stayed if King Dedede had been as awful as he's shown to be throughout the anime. Any sane person wouldn't put up with all those demands, for example, in Robo-escargon/Right Hand Robot on their first day on the job, so how did it get to where they are, stuck in syndication?
*Yes, he is a one-off character. His appearance in Mass Attack doesn't do anything for his characterization so it isn't worth dissecting it for the purpose of this essay
**Mature as in serious, not of sexual or violent nature. However, there are other episodes which get into that (unfortunately) and is a talk for another day

did anyone else read the episode where escargon lied to his mother about being king as a coming out analogy in the sense that he was lying to try to live up to what he thought his mom expected of him but at the end of the day she loves him no matter what he does with his life?

Speaking of Escargon it would have been nice to see more of his relationship with his mother. I feel like she brought out the best in him and it could have helped him become a better person.
honestly i think the best way for escargoon to get redeemed and start on a better lifepath is to have his mom help him. because him interacting with his mom vs interacting with the main cast is like literal night and day

Escargoon Headcanons
Hello!! Thought it would be interesting to share some of my Escargoon headcanons w/ the world! They are just under the cut so that they don't clog up any tags.
Escargoon is actually a nickname!! His real name is Édouard Escargon. He got the nickname "Escargoon" from, well, being DeDeDe's goon. He used to get really upset when people called him that, now he doesn't care much. He still gets upset if you call him "Eddie", but it is rather cute to see him go all red in the face.
A total bookworm. Escargoon loves reading before bed. Unfortunately, because he's always so busy, he finds that he never has time to finish any of them.
Used to hate coffee until he started working all of the time.
Escargoon is bisexual !!
The country Escargoon comes from is named Mollustre. It's a very quaint country inspired by France and it is populated with snails, slugs, sea snails, and sea slugs. (I guess that means he can also speak French I guess, haha)
Escargoon is somewhere in his early to mid 60's. The anime does refer to him as an old man at some points, so he's definitely somewhere in his 60's.
When Escargoon was younger, he used to work at his mother's bakery. He was a bread delivery boy of sorts. He had a little red wagon full of bread that he would deliver to the people in the area. When his younger brother was born, Escargoon used to double as a babysitter and a bread delivery boy.
Escargoon used to spend plenty of time with his father when he was younger. His father was a very knowledgeable man, so of course, little Goonie hung around with his dad and asked as many questions as possible. His father passed at some point (Escargoon was in his 50's when he passed). It is unknown whether Escargoon was able to attend his father's funeral, but his father's death has definitely taken its toll on him.
Since the "incident", Escargoon now has some marks on his shell from where the cracks were. These areas are healing, but they are still very sensitive. Below is a (fairly old) drawing of what these cracks look like.
He has quite a few nightmares about Maimaigoon and the destruction of Escardroid. They range from sad, to scary, to "how was I even able to dream about that?"
He has salvaged and kept whatever was left in Escardroid's wreckage. He cannot bring himself to rebuild it, though.
Escargoon is studying Shiver Star. The globe in his room is something that alludes to this. He might even write a book on some of his findings !! (If he gets the time to, that is)
He absolutely loves wearing corduroy and tweed. When he isn't wearing that, he's wearing his lab coat. (Funny bc they didn't give him clothes in the anime, but eh. Missed opportunity)
He used to wear glasses until they got frequently broken. Now he just wears contacts.
(Here's where my OCs come in, but it doesn't affect much) Escargoon is married to another snail named Isabelle, and they have kids together (two twin sons and two daughters). Before DeDeDe's involvement with NME became hazardous, Escargoon would let Isabelle and the children visit him from time to time. Now that NME has become more and more of a threat, he keeps this all a secret so that his wife and children will not be harmed. However, he does still write to them in secret, and has even sent over a few care packages for them.
